Arion Rosemariné -- and that's Rosemariné to you, thank you -- has a reputation in the elite Lacomblae Academy as, for lack of a more period term, a (very pretty, rich, borderline alcholic, and generally fabulous) magnificent bastard. It's a reputation that's well-deserved, as he has an almost frightening level of control over most of the other students due to his position as student superintendent. And he's far from a kind leader: at best, other students can expect him to be cold and blunt with them; at worst, well... corporal punishment was far more in style a few centuries ago. Rosemariné's technique of choice for dealing with misbehaving students is physical, and to that end he always carries around a staff of some sort (he's also fond of riding crops, but those are for special occasions). It's no surprise that people who are his inferiors tend to both fear and admire him. (The admiration coming not only from fear but also because he's truly talented in his classes, particularly Latin [he regularly reads Latin texts in mass].)

That's not to say that Rosemariné spends his days snapping at people whenever possible. He's truly a gentleman when not dealing with rulebreakers, and while people tend to irritate him it's not difficult for him to suppress that in favor of more restrained good manners. His default mode is not angry, but rather busy, stuffy, and stressed. He also feels that it's very important to stay on the good sides of others... which is to say that he's a massive suck-up toward those he feels that it would be an advantage to be liked by. He won't be a student forever, after all, and the kind of success he expects (not hopes for, expects) for his future requires connections and maybe a bit of underhanded manipulation.

Still, Rosemariné treats others with a distant, authoritative kindness and respect if he has no reason to have an unfavorable opinion of them, and he does hope for the best for students who follow the rules and seem like decent people -- it's simply not often apparent enough for anybody to find him remotely friendly. There are people he honestly considers his peers, too: Jules, a childhood friend and the only person he feels truly comfortable around, and Serge, a new student and the only one to treat Rosemariné as a friend. If he's alone with either (or both) of them, he's generally able to relax and show some of his usually hidden emotions, the ones that he thinks would make him seem weak if he was always open about them. Jules and (very recently) Serge are also the only two people he feels comfortable making physical contact with -- generally, Rosemariné can't stand being touched and will only do it in situations in which it is a necessity.

Basically, Rosemariné is a stuffy gentleman who has trouble getting close to people and hides most of his emotions with politeness and anger, and seeing as he's from a 70s shoujo manga, it's probably of no surprise that most of this comes from a tragic past. Just a few years earlier, when he was fifteen, Rosemariné was practically a different person: bratty, emtional, and fond of people (granted, with the same manipulative streak). All of that changed when one Auguste Beau, a distant relative and someone that Rosemariné hoped to get to know because of his prestige, drugged and raped him. The the fear and helplessness he felt that night had a humungous impact on him: he gained a dislike of physical contact, a hatred of anything to do with sex, and the occasional nightmare flashing back to that time. Although he began to need emotional support more than ever, he began to push people away and restrain his feelings in order to avoid getting hurt again.

The lack of a way to deal with his trauma is only part of why it hurt him so much, though. The other half of the problem is that Auguste Beau is not a pedophile but a chessmaster, and raping Rosemariné was out of a desire to have someone at Lacomblade that would act under his orders. Out of fear of repeating that incident, Rosmariné was forced to listen to Auguste's wishes (via letters and, far too often, in person and alone) for him to act in "raising" his son, Gilbert, in his place... something that equated more to torturing him. As you might be able to guess, that only serves as another source of stress for Rosemariné -- but a source of relief, as well, given that being able to hurt Gilbert became a way for Rosemariné to take out his feelings about Auguste.

In summary, Rosemariné is much deeper than the rich, stuffy, and frequently annoyed individual he initially seems to be -- although he is all of those things as well. He's also capable impressive acts of harm and manipulation toward others, all as he hides an intense sorrow and fear under a mask of formality.

Canon Background: Wikipedia. I can write something out if this plus the references to his past in his personality sectino aren't sufficient.

How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: Rosemariné's struggle to function while struggling alone with trauma and internal conflict certainly qualifies as bravery, but perhaps not the same kind of bravery that often characterizes Gryffindors. It's also worth mentioning in this house, he would probably kill some of his dormmates out of frustration. Like, literally kill them.

Hufflepuff: He's an incredibly hard worker to the point of not taking care of himself, and can be loyal to practically the point of obsession... but that's the beginning and end of Rosemariné's Hufflepuff traits. Playing fair rarly crosses his mind -- don't be stupid, you can't get ahead that way -- and the majority of people don't deserve any level of tolerance.

Ravenclaw: Rosemariné definitely values both intelligence and wisdom, and his studious nature combined with that would make Ravenclaw a good fit for him. However, he's not particularly artistic beyond apparenlty having a good (expensive) sense of style.

Slytherin: Which of these house's traits doesn't Rosemariné possess? (That was a rhetorical question, the answer is none of them.)
